Right to speedy trial
This right is well enshrined into the 6th amendment, as it clearly states that "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial...".
Just how speedy?
The constitution's definition of speedy has been up for debate for a while, so there have been multiple laws that have been made to allow for a time frame for these trials, including the Speedy Trial Act of 1974, giving a 70 day time frame between arrest and trial for federal cases. If however, The case is not speedy and neat inside the allotted time frame, charges must be dropped in such case.
"But what if I don't want a speedy trial? (stupid.)
One of the cool things is that a person can throw away their speedy trial right when needed for the collaboration of evidence and preparing defenses. As a result, I believe that a speedy and public trial is important as states cannot hold a person without due cause for a prolonged period.
